A dash of ancient history, a spoonful of rural charm and lashings ofbeautiful scenery make Bakewell - famous for its distinctive pudding - awonderful place to visit.
So, the small market town, found in the heart of the beautiful PeakDistrict National Park in Derbyshire, less than 30 miles from Derby, seemed like an ideal location for our new Virgin Hot Air Balloon launchsite.
When you take off from Bakewell Showground, on the bank of thepicturesque River Wye, you'll rise slowly and majestically into the blueyonder above the town, which features in the Doomsday Book
Keep your eyes peeled for the five arched bridge across the river andthe elegant spire of All Saints Parish Church which both date from the13th century.
As the gloriously green and open showground, home to the renownedBakewell agricultural show, gradually disappears below, miles of therugged Derbyshire Dales beckon.
Landmark beauty spots such as Lathkill, and Dovedale are but two of thefinest you are likely to look down upon in flight, whilst the Chatsworthestate, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall are equally likely to disappearbeneath the basket as you skim the glorious countryside.
Like Bakewell's tasty jam pudding, which was first made by mistake inaround 1860 when the cook at a local inn got the recipe for strawberrytart a bit wrong, a Virgin Balloon Flight from the town is sure to leaveyou with the sweetest of memories!
