Hot Air Ballooning Over - Belton Woods - (Grantham)

One of the Virgin Hot Air Balloon launch sites in Lincolnshire is located at the De Vere Belton Woods Hotel, which is set in 475 acres of tranquil countryside.

Lincolnshire is a lovely county of gently rolling countryside rich in period architecture.

The mellow stone of Lincoln itself displays all the influences of the centuries, dominated by the third largest cathedral in England. The National Trust property, Belton House, historic family home to the Earls of Brownlow is a short walk from the hotel and features many works of art, magnificent gardens and fascinating stories.

Belvoir Castle, home of the Duke of Rutland, occupies a commanding position with breathtaking views across the Vale of Belvoir. Its magical woodland garden set in a natural amphitheatre and sloping lawns lead down to the Rose and Statue Gardens. The castle boasts the Queens Royal Lancers Museum featuring field marshals including Allenby and Earl Haig.

Manthorpe and Belton are two of the county's showpiece villages, both being within 10 minutes walk of the hotel.

Lincolnshire is full of fascinating things from architecture, to villages, to people, to stories about royalty. For example Edward 1 held the first ever parliament in Lincoln Cathedral.

In 1215 an army assembled in Stamford to march on King John forcing him to sign the Magna Carta. Newport Arch is the only Roman arch in the country still used by traffic. Grimsby was named after a Danish fisherman called Grim. Scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark were filmed in Margaret Thatcher's old school. With such gloriously rich landscapes and heritage to look down upon from the comfort of the basket, or to explore on the ground, this area really does demand that you stay a day or two, at least.
